Restaurant Security Conference: Attendees Sharpen Their Saw

Posted by: Libby Print PDF

I attended the 31st annual conference of the National Food Service Security Council in St Louis, MO this past week with over 200 fellow professionals that support the restaurant industry with security, safety, risk management or products and services.  It was great to see old friends and make new acquaintances.

For the kickoff, keynote speaker, David Karam, President of Wendy’s International shared his perspective and insights on security and safety strategies and the importance of brand protection.  Another keynote speaker, Michael Kupstas, CFO from Panera Bread shared his thoughts on the significant contributions from his Loss Prevention Department in the company’s success and the importance of cooperative, value added partnerships with loss prevention suppliers.

Conference training sessions included such topics as, Advanced Internet Investigations for Food Safety Professionals, Making a Business Case for Loss Prevention, and Interview Strategies in the Private Sector.  The attendees chose training breakout sessions that included, handling media, non-security uses for CCTV, HR laws, professional certification programs, emerging threats to data security, outsourcing, and restaurant loss prevention from a franchisee perspective.  With a diverse audience, there were opportunities for everyone to sharpen their skill set.

The attendees are now returning to their respective companies with a fresh look at industry trends, issues, and challenges within the restaurant industry.  Given the opportunity to network and exchange ideas on best practices, new technology and security products and services, the security, safety and risk management professionals are armed with more information in their charge to protect the profitability of their companies, and their most valuable asset – their people.

I know I learn something each time I attend.  The industry is constantly challenged with new theft and crime trends affecting the profitability and viability of restaurant companies.  There are new, exciting products and services to help Loss Prevention professionals serve their companies.   I want to be up to date and current to offer the best advice, assessment and service for my clients.  I can’t wait to see what’s on tap for next year.
