Armed robbery.  The very combination of those two words makes one shudder. Within the Justice system, the act of armed robbery is a felony and a conviction carries serious consequences.  Yet many, fueled by drugs, alcohol, or desperation, plus their perception of an “easy mark”, are willing to take the risk.

When domestic violence invades the workplace

Posted by: Libby | Comment (0)

In Panama City, Florida a man called a local restaurant and threatened “to drive my truck through the building and kill everyone”, following a domestic dispute with his wife who was employed there.  He made good on his promise smashing through the Waffle House and hitting his wife with his vehicle.  She was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.  He was arrested for attempted murder and felony criminal mischief.  This was just one of the estimated 13,000 acts of violence against women at work each year by their domestic partners.

Shop Owner Shot Confronting Robber

Yasin Sara was robbed at his Y & S Supermarket this past week in Tampa, FL.  Sadly the robbery turned tragic when Sara confronted the gunman and was shot in the chest.   Luckily he is in critical but stable condition and expected to recover.  News accounts quoted a customer stating “he was the type of guy who stood his ground”, and “he was going to protect what was his.”  We love to root for the little guy, triumph over evil, and good guys over thugs.

Last week the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced a proposal to ban pre-employment background checks by employers. The proposal was in response to the heads and spokespersons of several social agencies that prepare convicts to re-enter the workforce. The EEOC chair, Amy Solomon stated in a press release, “Today, we had the opportunity to add to our knowledge of this issue and learn about the practical ways employers have been able to balance business concerns with the need to ensure that employment practices are fair and non-discriminatory.”

Robbery Turned Wrestling Match

The headline in the local newspaper caught my eye, “Pizza shop owner disarms robber”, accompanied by a photo of the grinning business owner with one of his delivery drivers. As loss prevention professional I understand there are differing perspectives on this. I will give my perspective, but want to first state the facts of the article.

Restaurant Rampage – Collateral Damage from Domestic Violence?

Posted by: Libby | Comment (0)

A Miami Herald headline screams, “Gunman’s Rampage at Hialeah Restaurant Leaves 5 Dead”.  Shortly after the small family-run restaurant’s closing time of 10 p.m., the gunman was fighting with a woman in the parking lot of a strip mall restaurant in Hialeah, FL.  During an apparent domestic argument he pulled out a gun, shot and killed the woman.  He then entered the restaurant and began shooting indiscriminately.  When it was all over, three other women were dead and three more were injured.  Some of the victims were employees of the restaurant.   He then drove away in one of the victim’s cars and was found dead a few blocks away of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
